If you intend on moving from one area of the country to another, and you have a large antique mirror you would like to bring along, you are most likely concerned about keeping it in safe condition as it is hauled a long distance away. There are several steps you can take in the packing of your mirror to help protect it from damage. Here are some tips you can use when preparing your mirror for a trip to a new home far away.

Affix Tape to the Glass to Help Protect From Injury

It is a good idea to place pieces of masking or painter's tape across the glass portion of your mirror. This can be done in an "X" or an asterisk-like pattern. Simply affix tape from corner to corner and edge to edge. Should your mirror happen to shatter, this will be helpful in keeping those who come into contact with it from getting injured by a shard of glass.

Add a Piece of Rigid Cardboard to the Front Portion

After you tape the pane of glass, you need to cover it to aid in protecting it from breakage. A rigid piece of cardboard can be taped directly to the front of your mirror. Make sure it is cut in the same size as the glass portion so there are no gaps present. If the cardboard is too big for the mirror, it may jostle around in the packaging it is placed inside. If the cardboard is too small, it will not offer adequate protection.

Wrap the Mirror in a Protective Layer

When the mirror's glass is covered, the entire unit can be wrapped inside a layer of bubble wrap. Purchase bubble wrap in a roll form to ensure you have enough to do the job. Roll the wrap around your mirror several times and use packing tape to secure it in place. 

Package the Mirror to Keep it From Breaking

Purchase a new cardboard box to hold your mirror. Do not reuse a box as it may not have adequate corrugation from previous items being inside. Use packing peanuts to fill several inches of the bottom of the box and then gently place your wrapped mirror on top of them. Fill any space between the mirror and the cardboard box with additional packing peanuts. Secure the top of the box with packing tape and be sure to label your package as "fragile" so your moving company knows to be a bit more careful with this item.
